Overview
Amazon Q Developer (the successor to CodeWhisperer) provides inline code completions, a chat interface, automated code reviews, and an agentic mode that can implement small features or fixes and open pull requests, available as extensions for popular IDEs and integrated into the AWS console. Its strongest advantage is deep familiarity with AWS services and documentation — it's particularly good at writing and explaining infrastructure-as-code, AWS SDK usage, and troubleshooting AWS-specific errors. Note: AWS blocked new Q Developer signups (both the free tier and new paid subscriptions) on May 15, 2026, and the IDE plugins/subscriptions reach full end of support on April 30, 2027; AWS is directing new users to its successor, Kiro, a spec-driven agentic IDE. Existing Q Developer subscribers can continue adding seats until the 2027 deadline, and the AWS Console/Slack/Teams versions of Q are unaffected. Teams not heavily invested in AWS will find less differentiation versus general coding assistants, and IDE support is narrower than GitHub Copilot's.
