The free tier covers a meaningful number of searches and extractions per month, suitable for occasional research; paid plans starting around $12/mo raise those limits for heavier academic or professional use. Elicit is far less useful for general, non-academic questions — its value is concentrated specifically in working through scientific literature, and extracted data should still be spot-checked against the original papers.
